It is estimated that more than half of Americans, with pets, prefer to travel with them. It is wise, when traveling by air, to plan ahead. While airlines have the same general rules, like your pet needs to be in a carrier, some differ in the details, like certain aircrafts can’t accommodate pets and some airlines have breed restrictions.
Maximum dimensions for carriers is a key consideration when taking your pet as a carry-on because the carrier must fit under the seat in front of you. For example, American wants the carrier to measure no more than 19″L x 13″W x 9″H and United no more than 17.5″L x 12″W x 7.5″H. Southwest even has their own carrier for purchase which measures 17″L x 10″W x 10.5″H.
Other preparations include updating any vaccinations your pet may need and making sure your pet is healthy enough for travel. No pet under the age of 8 weeks is permitted to fly. Some pets become anxious in the carrier for long periods of time. Make sure you bring along a comfortable blanket and a favorite toy!
